And I want your attention on each other.
As a San Antonio engagement photographer, one of the questions I hear most is, “Okay… what are we supposed to wear?!”
First, take a deep breath. You don’t need to become a completely different version of yourselves for your engagement photos.
You just need to feel like yourselves.
When you’re comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing, it shows. That’s what I want most when you’re in front of my camera: for you to feel comfortable enough to forget I’m there for a little while and focus on each other.
Because those are the moments that make your photos feel like you.
Whether we’re wandering around the Pearl, exploring the San Antonio Missions, strolling through a beautiful park, or heading out toward the Texas Hill Country, these tips will help you choose outfits that feel elevated, polished, and still completely like you during your San Antonio Engagement Session.

Before you open Pinterest or start ordering five different outfits, ask yourself one question:
“Do I feel like myself in this?”
Maybe you love getting dressed up. Maybe your ideal date involves jeans, sneakers, and your favorite shirt. Maybe you’re somewhere in between.
There isn’t one right way to dress for your engagement session.
I want you to look like you on your best date night, not like you’re wearing a costume because you think engagement photos are supposed to look a certain way.
If you feel uncomfortable in what you’re wearing, you’re going to be thinking about your clothes instead of each other.

If you do love getting dressed up, your engagement session is the perfect excuse to go for it.
A flowy dress. A great pair of trousers. A blazer. Heels. A beautiful pair of earrings. Whatever makes you think, “Okay, I feel GOOD.”
You don’t have to go full formal. Think elevated, intentional, and still completely you.
And if dressing up isn’t your thing? Don’t force it.
The goal isn’t to create the most impressive outfit. It’s to create photos that you’ll look back on and immediately recognize yourselves.
Your outfits don’t need to be identical to look beautiful together.
Instead, think about choosing a color palette that feels cohesive.
Soft neutrals, warm earth tones, denim, creams, muted blues, and greens tend to photograph beautifully, but don’t feel like you have to live inside a neutral color palette.
If you love color, wear color.
The key is balance.
If one outfit has a bold color or statement piece, let it be the moment rather than having both outfits compete for attention.
When you’re standing next to each other, your outfits should feel like they belong together without looking like you went shopping for matching uniforms.
This is one of my favorite things to think about when planning your engagement session.
Movement photographs beautifully.
A flowy dress catching the breeze. A jacket being thrown over your shoulders. A skirt moving as you walk. A loose button-down. A beautiful pair of trousers.
These little details give your photos movement and dimension while giving you something natural to do.
And if you’re not a dress person, that’s completely fine. Texture and movement can come from so many different pieces.
The goal is simply to avoid anything that makes you feel stiff or restricted.

Your outfit doesn’t have to be complicated to feel elevated.
Sometimes it’s the details that make everything come together:
Layers are especially great because they can give you a completely different look without changing your entire outfit.
And they give us something to play with while we’re moving around.

Your location can help you decide how dressed up you want to be.
If we’re wandering around the Pearl, you might want something a little more polished and editorial.
If we’re exploring the Guadalupe River State Park, you might love something playful and comfortable.
If we’re heading out toward the Texas Hill Country, earthy colors, movement, and elevated casual pieces can feel right at home.
And if we’re somewhere completely different?
We’ll make it work.
Your outfits don’t need to perfectly match the location. They just need to feel intentional within it.
You don’t need a giant list of fashion rules. But there are a few things that tend to pull attention away from you.
I’d generally skip:
Patterns are totally okay. Color is totally okay. Personality is very okay.
We’re just trying to make sure the first thing you notice in your photos is each other.
And gentlemen: please empty your pockets. Your phone and keys do not need to be part of your engagement session. 😉
This one is especially important.
If there’s something you’re self-conscious about, you don’t need to spend your entire session worrying about it.
Instead, choose clothing that makes you feel confident.
Love your arms in sleeves? Wear sleeves.
Feel amazing in a long dress? Wear the dress.
Prefer pants? Wear pants.
Love your legs in heels? Bring the heels.
There is no “correct” body type or outfit for engagement photos.
The goal is simply to choose pieces that make you feel like the best version of yourself.
When you’re comfortable, you’ll naturally relax more. And when you relax, your photos become more genuine.
If professional hair and makeup makes you feel like your best self, go for it.
And if you’re planning to have your hair and makeup professionally done for your wedding, your engagement session can be a great opportunity to do a trial and see exactly how everything photographs.
You don’t have to look dramatically different from your everyday self.
You just want to look in the mirror and think:
“Yep. That’s me.”
And don’t forget your ring! Give it a good cleaning and give those nails a little love before your session. Your hands are definitely making an appearance. 💍
One of my favorite makeup artists that I have worked with is Michelle Legorreta a.k.a Beauty Concepts, plus she does weddings!

Either works.
If you want more variety in your gallery, I usually recommend two:
Look one: The two of you on a really good date.
Look two: A little more dressed up.
Starting with the more casual look gives us time to warm up, get comfortable, and forget about the camera.
Then we can bring out the outfit that makes you feel a little extra.
But if changing outfits sounds like a hassle?
Don’t.
One outfit you absolutely love is better than two outfits you’re unsure about.
If you’re unsure where to start, think polished rather than necessarily formal.
A great pair of trousers or dark jeans with a button-down, sweater, or polo can look amazing.
Want to dress it up more? Add a blazer, sport coat, nice shoes, a watch, or another intentional accessory.
And make sure you and your partner are around the same level of formality. You don’t have to match, but you want your outfits to feel like they belong together.
If we’re moving between locations, I recommend bringing:
And if you’re wearing heels, bring a pair of flats for walking! Your feet will thank you.
You don’t need to know how to pose.
You don’t need to know what to do with your hands.
You don’t need to be naturally comfortable in front of a camera.
That’s my job.
I’ll give you direction when you need it and space when you don’t.
I’ll help you move, interact, and settle into the moment instead of asking you to stand in one spot and smile at the camera for an hour.
Because I don’t want your gallery to feel like a collection of poses.
I want it to feel like the two of you.
This is the part I hope you don’t skip.
Don’t treat your engagement session like another appointment on the calendar.
Make plans afterward.
Get dinner at the restaurant you’ve been wanting to try. Grab drinks. Get ice cream. Go somewhere that feels like a favorite date night.
You’re engaged. You’re planning a wedding. There’s a lot coming at you right now.
Take a few hours to slow down and just enjoy each other.
I’ll take care of the photos.
You just get to be in love.
Send me what you’re considering!

And seriously, if you’re standing in front of your closet wondering whether two outfits work together, I’d way rather you ask than spend the entire week worrying about it.
My goal isn’t to make you look like someone else.
It’s to help you feel like the best, most confident version of yourselves while you’re together.
And when you feel that way?
That’s when the good stuff happens.
If you’re looking for a photographer for your San Antonio engagement session who will guide you without making you feel overly posed, I’d love to photograph this season of your relationship.
